A closer look at Evolectric upcycled electric trucks and  their mission.

Fresno, California (ZeroRig.com) – Evolectric is a startup that’s been around for about four years. Started by Jackson Alvarez and Bill Beverly in Long Beach California, the young company began without a concrete plan. The founders knew they wanted to work on electric vehicle adoption, but how or what should this new company do to aid such a mission?

The first idea was services to help accelerate adoption of electric vehicles. Jackson and Bill worked together to help companies design and develop electric solutions on a consulting basis. However, they soon realized that the whole market was not being served strongly enough with new electric truck solutions.

And then the idea for Evolectric was born.

They decided to take existing trucks that were headed for the scrap heap and turn them into newer refurbished electric trucks. And that’s been their mission for the last few years.

Evolectric believes that there just aren’t enough new electric trucks being produced to meet demand, and with wait times of six to twelve months on new vehicles it’s no wonder why this small company is finding success in their niche.

Andrew Pontius, a spokesman for the company took ZeroRig.com for a ride in their demonstration vehicle at CALSTART’s Fresno Zero Emission Ride and Drive and Showcase. The vehicle running the Ride and Drive was originally a thirteen year old truck that was set for retirement, but Evolectric purchased the truck and reconstructed the entire drivetrain to become electric.

And it felt like a new truck. The cab had been refreshed. The exterior was crisp and clean. The electric motor was quick, responsive, and behaved just the same as any of the other electric vehicles at the Ride and Drive. We would not have known it was a thirteen year old truck if we’re told.

“It doesn’t have to feel and look old just because it is. It can be refreshed; it can be renewed. It can have a second life”, said Andrew.

“This truck with a new electric powertrain in it is good for another half a million miles”, Andrew continued. “It’s fun, quiet and zero emissions.”

Evolectric is beginning their line of trucks with the Isuzu N-Series family. It’s the first series of products where they want to learn, develop, and scale their business.  Of the N-Series, the company is focused on the NPR HD, NQR, and the NRR. The same electric kit works in all three different N-Series vehicles, allowing Evolectric to simplify operations and scale well.

“I think we’re coming to a point where the world is going to become more aware and more accepting of the repower of the circularity concept and not just say “Well that’s for developing nations or for other people”. I think people are going to become much more excited about not wasting our natural resources by always buying new [electric trucks].”

Regarding carbon emissions, when you create a new electric vehicle you have to overcome the carbon footprint created by the manufacture and creation of the truck itself by driving zero emissions for some time. Alternatively, reusing the cabin and chassis of an aged vehicle allows you to upcycle and forgo the carbon costs of creating these components for a new vehicle. For example, roughly 25,000kg of CO2 is saved by reusing the truck’s cabin chassis alone. Ecologically, this works as the basis of Evolectric’s circularity concept.
